Valley of Heroes is a memorial monument dedicated to the Battle of Sutjeska, which took place in 1943. The monument, honoring fallen fighters, was erected in 1971 and is the work of sculptor Miodrag Živković. In front of the monument stands a memorial ossuary where 3,301 fighters are buried.
The monument is awe-inspiring in its massive size and external appearance. It consists of two stone monoliths built from white cement, each 19 meters high, symbolizing the harsh terrain where the battle unfolded.
In the area of Tjentište in 1943, the most decisive battle of the National Liberation War occurred, a battle that influenced the history of European nations in the fight against fascism. The event took place in an interesting natural setting, inspiring the idea to construct a grandiose monument at this location and declare the surrounding area a National Park in memory of those glorious days.
During the construction of the memorial complex in the 1970s and later until the dissolution of the SFRY, youth from all parts of Yugoslavia actively participated in youth work actions, the most famous being the “ORA Sutjeska” in 1971. During the time of the SFRY, the memorial complex “Dolina heroja” was a well-known tourist destination, with an annual visitation of around 30,000 tourists.
