“No one will be able to dispute the fact that the great idea of Yugoslavia – as a community of kindred peoples – was created by the brightest minds of the Serbian, Croatian, and Slovenian nations. (There were no Bosnians of my kind there, but that’s not important now.) What is important is to acknowledge the fact that Yugoslavia was created by the best, and ruthlessly, mercilessly, and plunderously – destroyed by the worst. Perhaps this is what gives the idea of reincarnation of some new state community a chance – for a thousand years from now, when all the crimes produced are forgotten, if that’s possible. The beauty and strength of Yugoslavia in our memories are mostly defined by the ugliness of the reality we have experienced. And as that reality becomes worse and worse, and the roads are such, the memory of Yugoslavia will – however absurd it may seem – become increasingly better and more beautiful.”
