Hit of the Month a cult music show of Television Belgrade, was written by Mladen Popović and hosted by the popular presenter Dubravka “Duca” Marković. Modeled after the British Top of the Pops, the program promoted domestic pop music; in fact, it functioned as a top-20 chart of the most popular local songs.
From 1981, when it first began airing, it was initially broadcast on Mondays on the First Channel, and later, during its most popular phase, on the Second Channel.
At the time, Yugoslav Radio Television (JRT) had enough funding to record three or four brand-new music videos every week by bands from across the SFRY, and then present them as nominees on the show. The videos were directed by established filmmakers such as Miša Vukobratović and Stanko Crnobrnja, as well as younger directors like Zoran Pezo, Vladimir Slavica, Goran Gajić, and Mihajlo Stanić.
At the end of each year, a special “New Year’s Hit of the Month” episode was broadcast, during which the Hit of the Year was selected. Over the course of the show’s run, some of the biggest names of the Yugoslav music scene appeared on it, including Bajaga i Instruktori, EKV, Denis & Denis, Zana, Zabranjeno Pušenje, Plavi Orkestar, Poslednja Igra Leptira, and Partibrejkers.
