He obtained the role of Perhan, for which he remained forever recognizable, quite by chance. While he was in the second grade of a lower music school, he had a habit of stopping by his father’s workplace at the Markale market after class. Emir Kusturica and his assistant happened to visit the nearby restaurant where Davor stopped for a drink. The assistant asked Davor’s father if Davor could participate in an audition for the movie “When Father Was Away on Business.” He agreed, and during the audition, it became evident that he was perfect for the role. After the film “When Father Was Away on Business,” he decided to enroll in a film academy. However, he was unsuccessful, and he didn’t attempt it again later.
At the age of just under 18, Davor became the leading actor in Emir Kusturica’s next film, “Time of the Gypsies,” after which he was declared one of the five best actors in Europe. He and his co-star in the film, Azra, played by Sinolička Trpkova, were declared the best acting couple in the former Yugoslavia.
He was compared to Dustin Hoffman, but in the early 1990s, he got involved with heroin. He attempted to go through rehabilitation several times, but without success.
On May 31, 1999, he committed suicide in Novo Mesto. He was 30 years old.
