“Yugoslavia truly was an opportunity for everyone; it was the maximum minimum for entering the wider world. It’s no coincidence that we were world champions in handball, Olympic and world champions in basketball, and that we are still strong in water polo, as we once were in football as well.
And not only in sports—this was a serious country where we all had self-respect and felt honorable. If we made a hypothetical calculation of what life would be like today had there been no wars and if that country had remained as it was and developed normally as it could have, it would certainly be incomparably more honorable, better, and more dignified than what we have now in these small states.”
