Darko Pančev – cobra from Vardar

Darko Pančev, Yugoslav footballer, began his career at Vardar in Skopje in 1982, where he became the youngest player in the history of Yugoslav football to finish the league as the top scorer. It happened in the 1983/84 season when he was only 18 years and 8 months old, and he scored 19 goals.

As a player, he was known by the nickname “cobra from Vardar” due to his great speed and agility.

In 1988, he moved to Crvena zvezda (Red Star Belgrade). That same year, he served in the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) and later became the league’s top scorer in the 1989/90 (32 goals), 1990/91 (34 goals), and 1991/92 (25 goals) seasons.

Man of decisive moments

In the final of the national cup in 1990, he scored the decisive goal that led Crvena zvezda to win the Yugoslav Cup. He was the scorer of the decisive penalty kick in the UEFA Champions League final at the Stadio San Nicola in Bari, Italy, where Crvena zvezda became the champions of Europe in 1991.

As a player for Crvena zvezda, he won three league titles in 1990, 1991, and 1992, the Yugoslav Cup in 1990, the UEFA Champions League in 1991, and the Intercontinental Cup in 1991.

In 1992, he signed a contract with Inter Milan. He played 12 matches for Inter, scoring one goal. In January 1994, he was loaned to German club VfB Leipzig, where he played 10 matches and scored two goals. After that, he returned to Inter for a year and scored two more goals before moving to Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he scored another two goals. He ended his career in 1997 at Swiss club Sion, winning the league and cup double.

National Team

Pančev played 27 matches for the Yugoslav national team and scored 17 goals. He made his debut on March 31, 1984, against Hungary (2-1) and played his last match on November 13, 1991, against Austria (2-0). He was the top scorer of the national team in the qualifying matches for the 1992 European Championship with 10 goals, but Yugoslavia did not participate in the tournament due to international sanctions. Pančev played three matches and scored two goals at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, both against the United Arab Emirates (4-1), with Yugoslavia finishing in fifth place. From 1993 to 1995, he played six matches and scored one goal for Macedonia.
