She was one of the most popular singers and sex symbols of the 1980s. She started out in the band Videosex, and later continued with a successful solo career.
Slovenian bands such as Buldožer, Pankrti, Lačni Franc, and Laibach had already been well established, and then they appeared. The band Videosex was founded in 1983 by Iztok Turk and Janez Križaj, and Anja Rupel became the lead singer after an audition. They sang about taboo topics such as masturbation, female serial killers, and suicide caused by postpartum psychosis…
Anja Rupel, recognizable for her unusual style that was far ahead of its time—with the face of an innocent girl and black hair with bangs—was the object of admiration for many men in the former Yugoslavia. She was only 16 when they started recording, and her mother even accompanied her to her first concert with the band.
Rupel’s aesthetic appeal and the deliberately used provocative image were present throughout the band’s entire existence. She was considered a sex symbol, and this was later paid tribute to by Goblini in the song “Anja volim te.” Laibach, in their cover of The Beatles classic “Across the Universe,” used Anja Rupel in an almost sacred interpretation.
