Bubanj Memorial Park is a memorial complex built in remembrance of the citizens of Niš and southern Serbia who were executed during the Second World War.
The execution site was initially marked with a memorial pyramid in 1950, while the new monumental monument, the work of sculptor Ivan Sabolić, was unveiled in 1963.
The park was placed under state protection in May 1973. In March 1979, by decision of the Assembly of Serbia, Bubanj Memorial Park was declared a cultural monument of exceptional importance.
The monument consists of three concrete obelisks symbolizing raised arms with clenched fists. Each of the three fists is of a different size, representing a man’s, a woman’s, and a child’s hand defying the enemy—because entire families were executed.
Approximately 10,000 camp inmates and prisoners of the Special Police and the penal institution were killed at Bubanj. The entire area of Bubanj is crisscrossed with trenches in which the executed victims were buried.
